Exchanging links with other websites (especially if they have similar content) can
help you rank higher in search engines - particularly, Google.
You can request or trade links for the purpose of gaining traffic because if search engines see
that many sites link to you, they assume that you have content that would be of
interest to visitors. It is worthwhile to put money and effort into this method of marketing.
Without spending hundreds of dollars per month, "link swapping" techniques are the most powerful method available
to market your business online.
What is a Link Exchange?
You have a site, and so does someone else that isn't
directly competing with your product or service. You send them an email offering to
trade links with them. They put a link to your website and you put a link to theirs.

Why don't all sites do trade links?
It takes time and the results build slowly! They are cumulative, though.
You have to stick with them until you get about 30 or so link trades.
The more you get the better, but don't give up until you have at least 30!
How do I find link partners?
Here's an example... In this case you are
a pet food site. Use a Search Engine to find veterinary
clinics, animal pages, animal accessories, etc. Look for pages that are related
to your topic, but that are not in direct competition (such as another geographical area). Once you find these places, send
them a polite email asking to trade links with them.

Are all Links Good?
Sites which rank in the top 50 results of a search are most valuable to exchange links with.
Google and other search engines penalize for linking to the lower end
sites because many people try to make their own link farms. Google and other search engines
may consider sites below top 100 to be a link farm of some kind. It will help
you to have the lower sites link to you, but it will not help ( even hurt you ) to link
back to low ranking websites.
Nobody is Answering My Emails for Link Trades
Always start with an email. But many people get tons of email or don't see the benefit of
trading links with you. You could try to call them. A follow up email after about 10
days might also do a much better job than emailing them one time.
You can also offer a better incentive, like a full page article about their website. Or
maybe you could just purchase a link from them. There are many ways, but the important
thing is that you don't give up. Get as many links back to you that you can from respectable
sites.
Steps to take:

- You can discuss swaps with any sites. In addition to exchanging, add your link at any
directory such as your state (

Find the FREE ones first.
- Join a service such as http://linkpartners.com
which is a free service. Follow their
instructions to Register your site information, Login with your username/password, and Search
for partners in your category or classification(s).
- They have many useful articles on their site to help you.
- They also offer a pay service ($20/mo ?) to help automate your linking.
Other options for link exchange include purchasing software. Just search online.
